Claudio Monteverdi left Italy only twice during his long life. As a member of the court of Vincenzo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, he undertook, in 1599, a trip to the region that was the source of many of his most important musical influences: Flanders. It was during this trip that Monteverdi encountered the 'Canto alla francese', trace of which was soon found in Italian vocal music, in particular in the 8th book of Madrigals by Monteverdi. Quite clearly, he was, as of early childhood, familiar with the exports from the Franco-Flemish school: Josquin Desprez, Adrian Willaert and Orlando di Lasso, to cite just a few, all of whom lived and composed in Italy. Monteverdi's 'Missa in illo tempore' takes several motifs from the work by the same name by Nicolas Gombert. And Giache de Wert, choirmaster in Mantua (1565- 1592) and born in Ghent, had a fundamental impact on Monteverdi's path toward 'Seconda prattica', in which the strict rules of contrepunto open to extreme dissonances and audacious chromatism as they uphold the texts.
