Event at Avignon :
Cette exposition présentée sur les murs extérieurs des Archives municipales est le fruit fruit d'une collecte de documents et de témoignages d’habitants et (anciens) commerçants sur l’histoire de la vie commerçante avignonnaise.
To create this new exhibition, the City Archives delved into the materials contributed by past shopkeepers and local citizens, and let these materials "tell their story". The idea is to show the history of some (former) shops and trades in Avignon in the 1900s, and show how commercial life contributed to weaving everyday life in a given neighbourhood.
After the show "Storefronts and Doorsteps", the Avignon Archives continues the theme of shops and with this Act II, they recreate the tales and documents they have inherited within the framework of collecting 'Histoires de vies commerçantes avignonnaises' (Stories of Shopkeepers in Avignon) they have been working on for several months. The first exhibition deliberately left us "on the doorstep" of the shops, contemplating the shopfronts and letting past memories flood in. This second exhibition takes us into the shop and gives us an inside look at retail life over the past century.
On both sides of the counter, in front of and behind the cash register, people's words evoke the work, the human relations, daily life and neighbourhood dynamics. Their stories are accompanied by photographs, images of objects and papers. These shared memories have come from family albums and old trunks, shared by their owners who have thus contributed to creating an exhibit which reaches out to all.
This exhibition has also prepared guided tours for groups available by advance appointment, workshops, treasure hunts in the city and observation and investigation games for all ages.
