The tourist service at Avignon :

Plenty of easy circular routes for walking, cycling or mountain-biking on the river islands are accessible by crossing from Avignon on the Daladier Bridge or the free shuttle ferry. From this verdant waterside setting, look back across the river for great views over the Popes’ Palace and the Pont d’Avignon.

Europe’s biggest river island is highly prized by Avignon locals for its bucolic atmosphere. The towpath along the Rhone offers lovely views over the city of the Popes and its famous bridge.
Then the routes turn inland, taking you through the lush pear, apple and peach orchards on these rich alluvial soils.
The unspoiled riverbanks are wooded with poplars, elms and maples, alongside more riparian vegetation. Birds of prey, cormorants, warblers, grey herons, and ducks have their habitats here, and even beavers and rare species of beetles are at home in the wild areas of this river island.
The free shuttle ferry across the river from Avignon to the towpath has made the island even more attractive.
